1. Summary

Social stealth allows the squad to bypass restricted areas by using disguise and social manipulation rather than relying solely on physical cover. One character can equip map-found disguises to walk undetected among standard enemies, while social interaction abilities let her distract or lure male guards. A second character can perform direct mind control over NPCs through occult techniques, and a companion animal provides additional distraction. Each social tool has specific enemy-type immunities — Long Coats and dogs pierce disguise, certain enemy types ignore lures or charms — ensuring social infiltration is a tactical layer with counters rather than a universal bypass.

3. Design Intent / Job Story

When the squad needs to reach a guarded area that is too heavily patrolled for pure physical stealth, I want to equip a disguise and use social abilities to walk among enemies, so that I can reposition characters or lure isolated guards without triggering combat. When I need to neutralize a specific threat without approaching it physically, I want to use mind control to turn an enemy against their allies, so that I can create chaos or eliminate a target while staying hidden. When I need to move an enemy away from their post without throwing items or making noise, I want to use lure or flirtation abilities to bait them into following me, so that I can isolate them for a silent takedown.

4. Role in Gameplay Loop

  • Social infiltration adds a second stealth dimension that lets players enter spaces and manipulate enemies through identity deception and social interaction rather than only through concealment.
  • It creates mission-planning decisions around which characters to bring, since disguise availability is character-dependent and some missions place disguise pickups in specific map locations.
  • It introduces an asymmetrical counter system where certain enemy types are immune to social tools, requiring the player to scout enemy composition before committing to a social approach.
  • It synergizes with the distraction and takedown systems by providing unique tools (lure, flirtation, mind control) that are mechanically distinct from noise-based or item-based distractions.
  • It supports non-combat mission completion by allowing characters to walk through guarded areas, redirect guards, and complete objectives without violence.

5. Preconditions

  • A disguise-capable character must be in the active squad and present on the mission.
  • A disguise pickup (clothing item or civilian to subdue) must exist somewhere on the mission map.
  • The player must physically acquire the disguise by either picking up map-placed clothing or subduing a civilian and having the character automatically take their clothes.
  • The disguise ability is toggled on via a dedicated ability slot (hotkey G on the character action bar).
  • Mind control requires the controlling character to be alive, within line of sight of the target, and to have remaining mind control charges.
  • Social abilities (distract, lure) require line of sight to the target enemy.

7. Core Rules

  • A disguised character is invisible to all standard enemies (Gunmen, Thugs, Civilians) as long as the disguise remains active and the character performs no suspicious actions.
  • Dogs and Long Coats are immune to disguise and will immediately detect and attack a disguised character on sight.
  • Performing any suspicious action while disguised breaks the disguise: attacking an enemy, throwing a consumable (e.g., perfume vial), or carrying a body will instantly reveal the character.
  • Environmental interactions such as crouching, hiding in bushes, and climbing stairs do NOT break disguise.
  • Disguises are found on the mission map, either as clothing items placed in the environment or on civilians who can be knocked out — subduing a civilian and picking them up with the disguise-capable character automatically steals their clothes.
  • The disguise is toggled via a dedicated ability slot; picking up the disguise does not automatically equip it.
  • While disguised, the character can use the Distract ability to draw an enemy's attention indefinitely, causing them to become stationary and face the character. Distract works from safe zones even without a disguise.
  • Lure is only available while disguised and causes targeted enemies to follow the character briefly. Lure cannot be used on Ponchos.
  • Both Distract and Lure only work on male enemies; female enemies are immune to both.
  • Using Lure puts both Lure and Distract on a shared 9-second cooldown.
  • Long Coats are immune to Distract when the disguised character is in a safe zone (green shield icon).
  • A safe zone is indicated by a green shield icon above the character's head and a green-highlighted ground area; enemies inside safe zones treat the disguised character as non-threatening.
  • Mind Control allows direct possession of an enemy or creature at the cost of one health point and one Mind Control charge. The controlled target can act freely within a limited radius around the controlling character.
  • While Mind Control is active, the controlling character is completely stationary and vulnerable.
  • A mind-controlled target performing suspicious actions (e.g., aiming a weapon) will be shot by other enemies but will NOT trigger an alarm.
  • Long Coats can only be mind-controlled after being damaged and stunned first.
  • A companion animal provides brief enemy distraction (approximately 6 seconds, halved against certain enemy types); Long Coats are immune. The animal cannot be killed or targeted by enemies.
  • Connected targets share all distraction and social effects: if two targets are linked, distracting or luring one affects both simultaneously regardless of distance.
  • A disguise-capable character can drag unconscious allies while disguised without alerting enemies.

8. BDD Scenarios

Scenario: Acquiring and equipping a disguise

When
the player moves Kate to a map-placed clothing item and collects it
Then
the disguise becomes available in Kate's ability bar as a toggleable icon

Scenario: Acquiring disguise from a civilian

Given
Kate is near a civilian NPC wearing suitable clothing
When
the player subdues the civilian and picks up the body with Kate
Then
Kate automatically steals the civilian's clothes and the disguise becomes available

Scenario: Walking through enemy territory while disguised

Given
Kate has the disguise toggled on and is within a guarded area
When
standard enemies (Gunmen, Thugs) have Kate in their vision cone
Then
the enemies do not detect Kate and their vision cone remains green

Scenario: Long Coat pierces disguise

Given
Kate is disguised and enters the vision cone of a Long Coat
When
the Long Coat's line of sight reaches Kate
Then
the Long Coat immediately detects Kate and attacks regardless of disguise state

Scenario: Dogs pierce disguise

Given
Kate is disguised and a dog is within detection range
When
the dog is in the same area as Kate
Then
the dog detects Kate through the disguise and attacks

Scenario: Suspicious action breaks disguise

Given
Kate is disguised and within enemy vision
When
Kate throws a perfume vial, attacks an enemy, or carries a body
Then
Kate's disguise is broken and all enemies who can see her enter alert state

Scenario: Environmental actions preserve disguise

Given
Kate is disguised and moves through guarded terrain
When
Kate crouches, enters a bush, or climbs stairs
Then
the disguise remains active and no suspicion is raised

Scenario: Distract ability redirects enemy attention

Given
Kate is disguised and in line of sight of a male Gunman
When
the player activates Distract on the Gunman
Then
the Gunman becomes stationary, faces Kate, and keeps his vision cone locked in that direction indefinitely

Scenario: Lure moves enemy out of position

Given
Kate is disguised and near a male Gunman who is in line of sight of other enemies
When
the player activates Lure on the Gunman
Then
the Gunman follows Kate for a brief period, moving him out of the other enemies' sight lines

Scenario: Lure fails on immune enemy types

Given
Kate is disguised and targets a Poncho with the Lure ability
When
the player activates Lure on the Poncho
Then
the Poncho ignores the Lure and remains at their post

Scenario: Social abilities fail on female enemies

Given
Kate is disguised and near a female enemy
When
the player activates Distract or Lure on the female enemy
Then
the female enemy ignores Kate's advances and takes no action

Scenario: Cooldown after Lure usage

Given
Kate uses the Lure ability on a valid target
When
Lure activates successfully
Then
both Lure and Distract enter a 9-second shared cooldown and cannot be used until the cooldown expires

Scenario: Safe zone protection against Long Coat distraction

Given
Kate is in a safe zone (green shield icon visible) and disguised
When
Kate uses Distract on a Long Coat
Then
the Long Coat ignores the Distract and does not change behavior

Scenario: Mind control basic use

Given
Isabelle has remaining Mind Control charges and is within range of an enemy Gunman
When
Isabelle activates Mind Control on the Gunman
Then
the player gains direct control of the Gunman; Isabelle loses one health point and one charge; Isabelle is stationary and vulnerable while controlling

Scenario: Mind-controlled enemy triggers friendly fire

Given
a mind-controlled Gunman is aiming at an ally under other enemies' observation
When
the other enemies observe the mind-controlled Gunman aiming
Then
the other enemies shoot the mind-controlled Gunman but no alarm is triggered

Scenario: Mind control on Long Coat requires prior stun

Given
Isabelle targets a Long Coat with Mind Control
When
the Long Coat has not been previously damaged and stunned
Then
Mind Control fails and cannot be applied

Scenario: Companion animal distraction

Given
Isabelle's companion animal is near an enemy
When
the player commands the animal to distract the enemy
Then
the enemy is distracted for approximately 6 seconds; Long Coats are immune; the animal cannot be harmed

Scenario: Connected targets share social effects

Given
two enemies are linked by a Connect ability
When
one linked target is distracted by Cooper's coin or lured by McCoy's bag
Then
the other linked target also becomes distracted or lured in the same manner regardless of distance

Scenario: Disguise badge constraint

Given
a mission has a "Do not use disguise" badge challenge
When
the player picks up a disguise item but never toggles the disguise ability on
Then
the badge challenge remains unfailed (only equipping the disguise counts as use)

Scenario: Mind control radius limit

Given
Isabelle has mind-controlled an enemy
When
the controlled enemy moves beyond the control radius around Isabelle
Then
Mind Control is interrupted and the enemy returns to normal behavior

9. Edge Cases

  • If a disguised character is carrying a body and enters an enemy vision cone, the disguise breaks and the character is immediately detected.
  • If a disguise-capable character picks up a disguise but does not toggle it on, mission badge constraints that forbid disguise use are not violated.
  • If the controlling character is killed or knocked out while Mind Control is active, the controlled target immediately returns to normal behavior.
  • If a mind-controlled target moves beyond the control radius, Mind Control is interrupted — the target may be in a suspicious position when control drops, potentially triggering an alarm.
  • If two connected targets are both immune to a social effect (e.g., both are Long Coats), the social effect has no impact on either.
  • If a companion animal distracts an enemy who is then connected to another target via Connect, both targets are distracted.
  • Long Coats that are mind-controlled after being stunned may be in a position where other enemies can see them readying weapons, causing the Long Coat to be shot — but this does not trigger an alarm.
  • If no disguise pickup exists on a particular mission map, the disguise-capable character's social infiltration abilities are limited to Distract (usable without disguise from safe zones) and basic interactions.
  • Kate dragging an unconscious ally while disguised does not break the disguise, but dragging an enemy body does — this distinction may not be intuitive to players.
  • The shared 9-second cooldown on Distract and Lure means that using Lure temporarily removes the player's ability to redirect enemy attention with Distract.

10. QA Notes

  • Verify that the green safe zone shield icon is consistently visible whenever the disguised character is in an area that grants safe zone status.
  • Test that the disguise correctly breaks in all suspected actions: perfume vial throw, melee attack, ranged attack, body carry, and body drag (enemy vs ally distinction).
  • Confirm that dogs and Long Coats detect disguised characters at the same range as non-disguised characters.
  • Verify that the 9-second shared cooldown for Distract and Lure functions correctly and displays feedback to the player.
  • Test Mind Control radius boundaries: verify that the radius is visually indicated and that control breaks cleanly at the edge.
  • Confirm that mind-controlled enemies performing suspicious actions are correctly shot by allies without triggering alarm.
  • Test that Long Coats require prior damage and stun before Mind Control can be applied.
  • Verify that the companion animal cannot be killed or targeted by any enemy type.
  • Test the disguise acquisition flow: both map-placed clothing items and civilian subdue methods should reliably grant the disguise.
  • Verify that mission badge "Do not use disguise" correctly tracks ability activation vs pickup.
  • Test that environmental interactions (crouching, bush hiding, stair climbing) do not break disguise.
  • Confirm the gender restriction on Distract and Lure is applied to all female enemy types consistently.

11. Mechanic Dependencies

  • Squad Character Ability System (Disguise is a character-specific ability tied to one squad member; mind control is tied to another. Without the squad character ability system that gives each character a unique kit, these social tools would not exist as distinct gameplay options.)
  • Enemy Perception and Alarm AI (The disguise system modifies how enemy perception AI evaluates disguised characters, suppressing detection unless the enemy type is immune. Without the perception and alarm system, disguise has no mechanical effect.)
  • Distraction and Noise Manipulation (Kate's Distract and Lure abilities are social-stealth tools that share the same tactical design space as the broader distraction system (coins, whistles, bags). The distraction mechanic provides the baseline enemy attention manipulation that social abilities extend with gender and type restrictions.)
