1. Summary

Mid-tier enemies distinguished by their straw hat headwear who are resistant to standard distraction techniques. Straw Hat Guards are immune to lures such as Mugen's sake bottle and Yuki's bird whistle flute, and react to noise much less than Normal Guards. However, they are not totally immune to all distractions—a thrown stone behind them can still cause a brief turn, creating a short window for close-range attacks. When patrolling alongside Normal Guards, they will follow their patrol companion if the Normal Guard is lured away, providing an indirect method of repositioning them. They can be killed by all standard elimination methods but require more tactical planning to isolate due to their resistance to direct luring.

3. Design Intent / Job Story

When a mission route is blocked by guards who cannot be pulled away with standard lures, I want to identify which enemies are Straw Hat Guards and plan around their stricter distraction rules, so that I can bypass or eliminate them without triggering an alarm.

4. Role in Gameplay Loop

  • Adds a mid-tier enemy gate between Normal Guards and Samurai by limiting the player's reliable lure options
  • Forces route planning around fixed posts, facing direction, and short timing windows instead of simple relocation
  • Rewards advanced use of indirect manipulation, such as luring a patrol companion rather than the Straw Hat Guard directly
  • Teaches players to distinguish enemy silhouettes and test ability suitability before committing to a stealth action

5. Preconditions

  • A mission contains at least one active Straw Hat Guard placed by level design
  • Enemy AI is in patrol, watch, or guard-post state rather than already fully alarmed
  • The player can observe enemy identity through silhouette, hat, tooltip, tutorial text, or vision-cone inspection
  • A distraction, movement, bypass, or elimination opportunity is being evaluated against the guard

7. Core Rules

  • Straw Hat Guards do not leave their posts for major lure objects such as Mugen's sake bottle.
  • Straw Hat Guards cannot be pulled away by standard sound lures such as Yuki's flute in the way Normal Guards can.
  • Generic noise has a much weaker effect on Straw Hat Guards than on Normal Guards; they should not abandon their role unless the specific exception rules apply.
  • A thrown stone behind a Straw Hat Guard can still make the guard briefly turn, but this is an orientation window rather than a full lure or relocation.
  • The brief stone-turn window is sufficient only for fast actions that fit the timing and range constraints, such as slipping past or executing a close/ranged takedown from prepared position.
  • When a Straw Hat Guard patrols as part of a group with Normal Guards, luring the Normal Guard can cause the Straw Hat Guard to follow the patrol companion rather than react to the lure directly.
  • If a Straw Hat Guard sees a player character, exposed body, or suspicious action within their vision area, normal detection and alarm consequences still apply.
  • Straw Hat Guards can be eliminated by standard non-armored enemy kill methods, but their resistance to repositioning makes isolation and timing harder than against Normal Guards.
  • Level layouts should use Straw Hat Guards to hold important sightlines, posts, or route gates where simple lure-and-pass tactics would otherwise trivialize the encounter.

8. BDD Scenarios

Scenario: Sake lure fails on a Straw Hat Guard

Given
a Straw Hat Guard is holding a post
When
the player deploys a sake lure within the normal lure opportunity
Then
the Straw Hat Guard does not leave the post to investigate
And
the player must choose another bypass or elimination plan

Scenario: Stone creates a brief turn window

Given
a Straw Hat Guard is facing a guarded route
When
the player throws a stone behind the Straw Hat Guard
Then
the Straw Hat Guard briefly turns toward the stone
And
the player receives a short timing window to move or attack

Scenario: Patrol companion indirectly moves the Straw Hat Guard

Given
a Straw Hat Guard is patrolling together with a Normal Guard
When
the player lures the Normal Guard away from the patrol path
Then
the Normal Guard moves toward the lure
And
the Straw Hat Guard follows the patrol companion instead of reacting to the lure directly

Scenario: Failed timing causes detection

Given
the player is using a brief Straw Hat Guard turn window
When
the player remains exposed after the guard's facing returns
Then
the Straw Hat Guard begins detection through the normal vision feedback states
And
full detection triggers alarm consequences

9. Edge Cases

  • A stone thrown too far from the guard's relevant facing logic may fail to create a useful turn window.
  • A stone turn can help with orientation but should not move the Straw Hat Guard away from the post like a full lure.
  • If multiple Straw Hat Guards overlap sightlines, turning one guard may still leave the player visible to another.
  • If a patrol companion is lured into a blocked or invalid path, the Straw Hat Guard should preserve patrol cohesion without teleporting or breaking formation.
  • If the Normal Guard companion is eliminated or incapacitated, the Straw Hat Guard should not continue following a nonexistent patrol leader.
  • A player who treats Straw Hat Guards like Normal Guards may waste a lure item or expose a character during the failed reaction.
  • Alarm reinforcements being easier Normal Guards should not downgrade existing Straw Hat Guards already placed in the level.

10. QA Notes

  • Verify the tutorial popup text for Straw Hats appears at the first intended encounter and can be dismissed normally.
  • Test that Mugen's sake does not pull a Straw Hat Guard off post while it works on a comparable Normal Guard.
  • Test that Yuki's flute fails to directly lure Straw Hat Guards while still affecting nearby Normal Guards.
  • Verify a stone behind a Straw Hat Guard causes only a brief facing change and not a full investigation walk.
  • Measure the practical action window created by a stone turn across difficulty settings and animation speeds.
  • Test paired patrols where a Normal Guard is lured and confirm the Straw Hat Guard follows the patrol companion.
  • Verify Straw Hat Guards remain killable by standard non-armored elimination methods when timing and line of sight are valid.
  • Regression-test detection feedback when a failed Straw Hat bypass causes suspicion, alert, and alarm.

11. Mechanic Dependencies

  • Stealth Detection System (Their value comes from modified sight and hearing responses within the Stealth Detection System, including weaker noise reactions and strict alarm consequences when seen.)
  • Stealth Elimination Mechanics (Because direct lures are unreliable, players often resolve Straw Hat Guards through planned bypasses or stealth eliminations during short safe windows.)
  • Enemy Type Hierarchy (Straw Hat Guards are a child enemy tier inside the broader Enemy Type Hierarchy, inheriting enemy identity, placement, and tier differentiation rules.)
  • Normal Guards (Normal Guards provide the contrast case: they can be directly lured, and when paired in patrols they can indirectly pull a Straw Hat Guard along as a companion.)
  • Sound-Based Distraction Abilities (The mechanic is defined by exceptions to Sound-Based Distraction Abilities: sake and flute lures fail, while thrown stones can still produce only a brief facing change.)
